Ingénieure de recherche spécialiste en magnétisme marin

Andreina GARCIA-REYES

Research engineer / Specialist in marine magnetics

On a quest for the hidden treasures of the seabed

Discovering, testing, improving, digging, growing – exploration in all its forms is the common thread running through Andreina Garcia-Reyes’ career.

Born by the sea in Coro, a town in northern Venezuela that depends on the oil industry, Andreina studied mechanical engineering at the Central University of Caracas after her high school diploma, but she was more interested in geophysics and decided to take a different path. She quickly specialised in magnetism and gravity.

With her engineering degree in hand, she went on to complete a thesis in geophysical engineering on gravity and satellite magnetism at the Central University of Venezuela in 2009, under the supervision of Dr Nuris Orihuela, followed by a PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris in 2018, under the supervision of Dr Jérôme Dyment. At the same time, she worked on the reconstruction of tectonic plates in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico at the same Institute and on the development of calculation tools for the French magnetic observatory in Chambon-la-Forêt.

After two years of isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Andreina wanted to get involved in meaningful actions.

With a fellow researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe, she initiated and organised a series of seminars on equality, diversity and inclusion in scientific research at the same institute. She also undertook voluntary work at the Collège de France as an active member of the network of laureates of the Pause programme, the national emergency reception programme for scientists and artists in exile.

Since joining ABYSSA as a geophysicist, Andreina has been applying her expertise in marine magnetism to the company’s various projects.

After working for a long time on data acquired by satellites, a long way from Earth, Andreina now has the opportunity to collect magnetic data on the ocean floor thanks to the marine drones put into operation by ABYSSA.
A new perspective, a new set of variables, a new experience.
